So glad I’m here

November 18, 2010

Somehow music and song lyrics have worked their way into my life again after many years.  The sleep deprivation of having young children has nearly faded (now that both of them sleep through the night most of the time) and I’m able to pay closer attention to the world around me. Tucker has been playing the song The Gambler by Fun lately.

We were barely eighteen when we crossed collective hearts.

It was cold, but it got warm when you’d barely crossed my eye,

and then you turned, put out your hand, and you asked me to dance.

I knew nothing of romance, but it was love at second sight.

I listen and tear up every time I hear the song describe the life and love of this couple  as they look back over thirty years and remember the times that have gone by and the two children they have raised. I met Tucker on my eighteenth birthday and a little more than a year later we moved in together. Fifteen years ago today, a friend let me borrow her truck and I drove the many hours from Bar Harbor, Maine to Brattleboro, Vermont by myself wondering what was ahead of me. Like the day that I went back to the beach to find Tucker, to find out who he was, I knew that I needed to jump right in to a life with him. This decision didn’t look good on paper and I wasn’t very well supported (um, actually told by many that I was ruining my life) but I knew.

On my 36th birthday I will have spent half my life with Tucker.  We’ll have a 5 year old and an 8 year old and a boat just about ready to sail around the world.  In fifteen more years we’ll have grown up kids. Looking back we will surely have had lots of love, and joy, and daring adventure, following our hearts and our instincts.

I listen to a lot, seriously a lot, of kids music these days.  These words adapted by Elizabeth Mitchell feel just right:

So glad I’m here. So glad I’m here.  So glad I’m here every day. So glad I’m here.

And I’m so glad I’m here every day.

Joy brought me here. Joy brought me here. Joy brought me here, here today

Love brought me here. Love broiught me here, here today . Love brought me here. You know love brought me here.

Love brought me here, here today

I’m so glad I’m here. So glad I’m here.  So glad I’m here every day.

And we are so glad you are here every day too. What a beautiful thing to write – thank goodness you followed your heart – and came into our lives! I will read this over and over and I cherish it. All four of you delight and inspire us!

This is beautiful! thank you, Victoria. I understand it entirely… I, too, am so glad- so grateful!- to be living this life.

Isn’t it funny how the advent of sleeping-through-the night brings music back? I think I needed it more when I wasn’t sleeping, too!

I’m really not your new blog stalker (well, maybe a little) but had to let you know the neat little boomerang it gave me later in the day. Not long after posting the comment, I was out for a run (great trail through shoreline habitat, but that’s another story) listening to music and thinking about lyrics. Then this song comes on and BAM! it’s calling your post all over again!

Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange, you said everything changed
You felt as if you’d just woke up
And you said, “This is the first day of my life….”

Had to share… Google a lyric snippet and ‘bright eyes’ for the full set.

Behan, if you check your stats you’ll notice that I check your blog often too! Another song I could have included is Better Together by Jack Johnson. I love the part about how there is so much to dream and so much to do but for now “we’ll sit beneath the mango tree.”
