Micro Loans Unit Study

February 15, 2009

Ruby are about to start a [unit study](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeschooling#Unit_studies) on [micro credit](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_loan) .

We are going to select one person each week from [kiva](http://www.kiva.com) and loan them $25. We will be able to talk about where this person lives, what their economy is like (how much can $25 buy in Columbia?), what kind of work this person does, and what the loan will help them to buy. We can discuss interest, and how credit works. We will easily be able to cover Math, Geography, Social Studies, History, and can roll in Music, and possibly Art with a little finessing.

I’m excited about micro credit. I love the idea of empowering people, I love the idea of sharing this spirit with my kids, and I am excited about all the potential that this topic brings to our children’s education. If it goes well I’ll devote a blog entry every week to our progress.

If you have done similar unit studies with your student, please comment.

Tell me more about this Kivo. Is this a hypothetical loan or a real loan? The link didn’t work for me!

I’m interested in reading more, so keep us posted.
