I had to go back to work today. Its harder than I thought for so many reasons. This was a truly wonderful vacation. I spent some really good time with my sister and Michael, ate some amazing food (I’m going to need to ride extra hard to burn that off), played and laughed with Ruby and Miles until my sides were sore, and got to be a
bigger part of my kids lives for 12 days.
What I mean by “bigger part …” is that I had a chance to change 10 diapers in a row, deal with the unidentified crying, bumps on the head, tail, elbow. I got to go to the park almost every day, and work with Ruby on social and family skills.
As I was driving back from our New Years Eve/Day parties yesterday, I was struck by the notion that that type of interaction is not what some/most dads would look upon as important, and meaningful. (This notion was probably seeded by The Nanny Diaries, which we watched on Kate’s last night.) To my mind, this is the quintessence of parenting, and I feel blessed that I can be a part of it, and look forward to the day when I can make it my full time work.
I have no New Year’s resolutions this year, just more of the same. Happy New Year to you!!
